LEER Honors Education Internship Program
An Experiential Learning Opportunity for Education Majors
Children & Youth Programs

The LEER Education Internship Program offers Education Majors the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in literacy instruction and child development. Interns will engage in both training and direct program delivery through a literacy-focused summer camp serving children in grades 1–6. This selective, paid 8-week internship is designed to prepare future educators with practical behavior management skills, instructional strategies, and leadership experience.
Program Structure
Total Duration: 8 weeks
Week 1: Intensive Training & Orientation

Curriculum overview and instruction methods

Behavior management techniques, specifically restorative practices
-
Child engagement strategies
-
Program operations and safety procedures
Weeks 2–8: Summer Literacy Camp Implementation

Lead learning center(arts, literacy, faith, SEL) and enrichment activities
-
Support restorative practices and experiential learning
-
Mentor students to improve reading confidence and comprehension

Collaborate with staff to ensure high-quality camp programming
Eligibility Requirements
Applicants must:

Be Education Majors currently enrolled in an accredited college or university

Hold a minimum GPA of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale)

Provide one recommendation letter from an Education professor

Be at least 18 years of age

Be eligible to work in the United States
Compensation and Benefits

Stipend: $5,000 for the full 8-week program

Housing (taxable benefit): Provided at no cost for the duration of the internship

Program Director
LEER: A Children’s Literacy Program for the Española Valley
Children & Youth Programs

McCurdy Ministries believes every child deserves the
chance to read, learn, and thrive. For more than 100 years,
McCurdy has empowered children, youth, and families
through education, life skills, and faith-based community
programs. Now, McCurdy is seeking a dynamic Program Director to lead and expand children and youth programs through the LEER Literacy Initiative centered around the Enchanted Forest of Reading Library and Out of School Time.
What You'll Do

Lead Literacy-focused out-of-school-time programming (Summer Camp and After-school)

Oversee and grow the school-year Reading Buddy program
-
Design and launch new, creative programs for children and youth
-
Coach and inspire staff and volunteers
-
Build strong partnerships with schools, families, and community groups
-
Track progress and help boost children’s literacy by 10% annually
What We're Looking For
-
Bachelor’s degree in Education or related field (Master’s degree preferably)
-
Experience in literacy intervention, youth development, and/or education leadership
-
A creative leader who connects with kids, families, staff, and community partners
-
Skilled in Microsoft Office and data management (Salesforce)

Passionate about Social-Emotional Learning and restorative practices
