STARS Afterschool Learn and Play
Paid College Internship
This internship offers the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in literacy instruction and child development. Interns will engage in both training and direct program delivery through a literacy and academic focused afterschool program serving children in grades K–6. This selective, paid internship is designed to prepare college students with leadership experience, professional development, practical behavior management skills, and instructional strategies.
LEER (Literacy, Enrichment, Education, and Readiness for every child) is embedded in McCurdy Ministries, a 114 year old non-profit committed to creating hope and empowering the lives of children, teens, and their families in the Española Valley. The mission of STARS Afterschool is to develop the academic skills, confidence, and character needed to thrive in school and beyond. STARS Afterschool provides a supportive environment where children receive homework help, enrichment opportunities, healthy snacks, and meaningful relationships in a safe, engaging, academically focused, and playful afterschool environment.

Job Responsibilities

Supervise and engage children in a safe, positive, and nurturing environment.

Provide academic support and homework assistance to students, building critical thinking skills.

Facilitate center-based activities that promote literacy, creativity, and social-emotional growth.

Encourage positive behavior and model respect, responsibility, and teamwork.

Maintain accurate attendance and program records as required.

Prepare activity materials and ensure learning spaces remain organized and welcoming.

Communicate effectively with fellow staff, volunteers, program leadership and families.

Support the mission of LEER by creating a love of reading.
Qualifications
-
Currently enrolled in an accredited college or university, preferably with coursework in education, child development, social work, recreation, psychology, or related fields.

Experience working with children.

Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

Reliability, professionalism, and organizational skills.

Passion for helping children achieve high academic outcomes.
Compensation and Benefits

Part-Time $15/hour (12 hrs/week)

Monday-Thursday, 3:15-6:15 with occasional weekend activities
