Stuff and Nectar from the LEER Director

Reading, quite simply, is essential to learning. In the age of technology, we might be tempted to believe that being a good reader is essential. (If you're reading this, you probably already believe it even without knowing it.)

Through 2nd grade, we learn to read. Then, in 3rd grade, that flips to Reading to learn. Every other subject is built on reading. Math isn’t, you might say, but in reality, word problems like, “If the locomotive is going 55mph and it is 321 miles away from the station, what time will it arrive?” That’s a lot of words to lead to the math problem.

That said, learning aside, reading is a calming and growing activity. Studies show that ending your bedtime routine with 15-30 minutes of reading helps calm your nervous system, which leads to better sleep. (For those of you who love horror books, I’m not sure how that works. 😊)

Street signs, instructions, menus…. The world is filled with words, and enabling children to read means they will have an easier time functioning in the world.

Thanks for taking the time and energy to READ this!

See you in the library.
